A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe, often caused by the big toe pushing unevenly against the other toes. Over time, the joint becomes enlarged, causing discomfort, redness, and soreness as it protrudes from the side of the foot.
Hammer toe occurs when the toe bends upward at the middle joint and the end of the toe angles downward, making it difficult for the toe to lie flat. This condition can cause pain and pressure on the affected toe.
Causes: Both bunions and hammer toe can be hereditary or develop from injury, arthritis, diabetes, or wearing ill-fitting footwear that puts stress on the joints and tendons in the feet.
Prevention: Prevent these conditions by wearing shoes with a wide toe box that provide ample space for your toes. Orthotic devices can also help align the foot and cushion sensitive areas, reducing discomfort.
Treatment: Cushions, compression socks & sleeves, and wider shoes can help alleviate pressure on the bunion or hammer toe. Supportive insoles can help reduce stress on the toe joint. In severe cases, splints may be used to provide relief, especially during sleep.
